We actively seek those extra opportunities for children to have memorable experiences. We offer an extensive range of sport, music and club activities.

Western Downland CE (VA) Primary School has achieved the School Games Mark Recognition Award 2023-2024.

This is in recognition of the school’s engagement in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active.

We believe that Outdoor Learning provides invaluable, motivating and confidence-building experiences for our children, broadening horizons and stimulating new interests and skills. Each of our classrooms at the infant site has its own dedicated outdoor learning space. We enrich our curriculum with regular visits, encourage use of the rich opportunities in our own local environment and give each year group at the junior site a progressive residential experience ranging from a sleepover in school for year 3 to a week in Wales for Year 6.

Music at Western Downland

At Western Downland, we believe that music plays an important role in developing confident, creative and well-rounded children. Music gives pupils the opportunity to express themselves, develop their creativity and experience the joy of performing together. It supports confidence, teamwork, listening skills and perseverance, while providing opportunities for children to celebrate their achievements with others.

Music is a valued part of our curriculum, with children developing their skills through singing, composition, performance and exploring a wide range of musical styles. We are proud of the enthusiasm our children show for music and the opportunities they have to perform both within school and as part of the wider community.

We are also pleased to offer families the opportunity to access peripatetic music tuition for children who would like to develop their skills further. Lessons are available through specialist music teachers and can be arranged for a range of instruments, including:

  • Violin
  • Guitar
  • Recorder
  • Clarinet
  • Flute
  • Piano

These individual lessons allow children to develop their confidence, technique and musical understanding, whether they are beginning their musical journey or building on existing skills.

A highlight of our musical year is our annual Spring Music Concert, held at St Martin’s Church, Martin, near Rockbourne. This special event provides children with the opportunity to perform to an audience in a beautiful setting and celebrate the musical talents within our school community. From solo performances to group ensembles and singing, the concert is always a wonderful occasion that showcases the dedication, confidence and enjoyment our children bring to music.

We are proud of the role music plays in life at Western Downland and the lasting memories and experiences it creates for our children.
